Born on Christmas day to a family of considerable economic privilege, no one could have ever imagined that Humphrey Bogart would gain notoriety as perhaps the most famous cinematic tough guy of them all - which speaks volumes of his skill at his chosen craft. Bogart may have never participated in a single movie were it not for the Great Depression, when his career shifted to film as Broadway box office revenues declined sharply and productions were cut back.
Bogart's breakout role came in John Huston's "High Sierra" and a number of classic movies followed such as "The Maltese Falcon", "Casablanca", "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", "Key Largo", "The African Queen", "The Caine Mutiny" and many other works of note. Bogart was nominated for three Academy Awards and won one for his role in "The African Queen". A little known fact is that a real medical illness is named the "Bogart-Bacall Syndrome" - a condition marked by voice fatigue and an unnaturally deep voice tone.
